Morocco's major mining provinces: where the metals are

From the Anti-Atlas to the Rif, a tour of the geological domains that host the Kingdom's silver, cobalt, copper, gold and base metals.

Within a compact territory, Morocco brings together several very different geological domains. Each has its own history and deposit types, which directly shapes exploration strategy and the choice of methods.

The Anti-Atlas, the Precambrian core

The Precambrian inliers of the Anti-Atlas host some of the country's best-known deposits: the Imiter silver deposit in Jbel Saghro, Zgounder silver in the Siroua massif, Bou Azzer cobalt, linked to the serpentinites of the Neoproterozoic ophiolite, Bleida copper and the gold discovered nearby, Bouskour copper and silver, and Tiouit gold, silver and copper. In this province, understanding structures and alteration makes the difference.

Jebilet and Guemassa, the Variscan massive sulphides

North and south of Marrakech, the Jebilet and Guemassa massifs host polymetallic massive sulphides (zinc, lead, copper) formed in the Carboniferous and deformed during the Variscan orogeny, including Draa Sfar (Jebilet) and Hajjar (Guemassa). These deposits are explored by combining geology, geochemistry and electrical and electromagnetic geophysics.

The Central Meseta

In the Meseta, the Tighza district (Jbel Aouam) combines tungsten-gold mineralisation linked to small late-Variscan granitic stocks with later lead-zinc-silver veins. The region also hosts El Hammam, regarded as the largest fluorite deposit in North Africa, of Triassic age. These vein systems call for detailed structural mapping.

The High Atlas and the Rif

The High Atlas contains many carbonate-hosted lead and zinc occurrences, as well as polymetallic showings in its older massifs. In the north-east, in the eastern Rif, the Nador region is known for the iron skarns of the Ouixane district.

The southern provinces

In the south, the Reguibat Shield around Awsard exposes the oldest rocks in the country, of Archean age. This ground remains far less explored than the north of the Kingdom and is a true exploration frontier.

What it means for your project

Each domain has its own deposit models, prospecting guides and methods. Field knowledge of these settings avoids generic programmes and focuses the budget where the geology justifies it.
